Shing Kheang Aun Restaurant, or simply known as Sin Kheang Aun among locals, not only offers a collective variety of food ranging from Straits Chinese and Hainanese cuisine to Baba Nyonya delicacies, but is also a living evidence of the incoming of early Chinese Hainanese (inhabitants of Hainan Island, China) to Malaya (now Malaysia). Established in 1941, just before the Japanese Occupation, it is now stepping into its second half of a century, and is now run by the second generation. This old Hainanese restaurant is situated at Chulia Lane (off Chulia Street) at the heart of Georgetown, a heritage city itself, and serves many frequent customers.
Shing Kheang Aun Restaurant was founded in the early forties by a group of Hainanese working in Penang. Together with the contributions of other local names in the foodservice industry, it has brought Penang to its current glory of being dubbed a “Heaven of Delicacies”. The common knowledge that Hainanese are the leaders of the foodservice sector is mainly due to the history of Chinese Hainanese in Malaysia. They are said to be the latecomers to Malaya comparing to other Chinese groups. Due to this time factor, many job opportunities were already secured by the local people. Therefore, the early Hainanese participated in the less competitive foodservice industry. During the British rule, many British colonialist families and those of the upper caste in the social hierarchy took Hainanese background as one of the requirements in hiring chefs and cooks. During that time, many Hainanese were hired by the wealthy colonialist families and the westernized Straits Chinese and Baba Nyonya families as family cooks and helpers. It was even said that many of those who took charge in cooking for the British armies and government bodies were Chinese Hainanese.
Georgetown is a heritage city previously under British colonial rule, with many pre-war buildings influenced by European, Chinese and local Malay architectural designs in sight. These scenes of old streets and buildings from those times are easily seen at Shing Kheang Aun Restaurant.
